100 Days

01/28/13

I have 100 days until my 50th birthday.  By this time I wanted to be thin and healthy to enjoy my 50th year….not so much.  Much of it is my own fault; however, there is a caveat…

My left hip is falling apart.

In the past, I’ve cycled through being fit and healthy to being fat and unhealthy to being fit and healthy and fat and unhealthy…you get the drift.

The way I’ve lost weight in the past has hinged upon working out.  That just hasn’t been able to happen.  My hip and lower back have not allowed me any cardio.  I am not inclined to use the pool but I may get desperate enough to resort to senior citizen water aerobics.

I went to the chiropractor 2-3 times a week from November of 2011 through May of 2012. During that time the flexibility of my back improved. What did not improve was the feeling of being stabbed in the lower left side of my back.  The pain never got any better.  So I got busy and discouraged over the summer and quit going to the chiropractor. Finally, last month I hobbled to the Dr. who then had me hobble to a specialist.

The verdict? My left hip is no-good.

I sat in Dr. Queenen’s office and he showed me the x-rays: bone on bone w/bone spurs and polyps in the joint as well as the ball part of my femur with cracks and gouges and flecks of debris floating around. No amount of back rubs will fix it.

So now I’m looking at my calendar to find when I can get a new hip (now that I think of it, maybe I will take up that senior water aerobics class.)

Here’s the kicker…

Before I get the new hip, I have to lose 50lbs. That’s gonna suck. But it’s necessary.
