Is it the end of the world?

366

Because 2012 is a leap-year, I have 366 blogs to go.

I saw an interesting list about the election year of 1912.  These were the pertinent issues being debated:

> Should America be capitalist or socialist?
> Should government protect the social welfare of citizens?
> Should women vote, and participate as full citizens in the life of the nation?
> Should Americans expand their democracy in other ways?
> Should government exercise more control over businesses?
> Should government try to solve the conflict between "capital" and "labor?"
> Should the government work vigorously for the conservation of natural resources?

There were four candidates vying for the presidency:

> Woodrow Wilson (Democrat), who won the election
> Theodore Roosevelt (Progressive or "Bull Moose" Party) who came in second in the election
> William Howard Taft (Republican), the incumbent President,
> Eugene Debs (Socialist Party of America) who offered Americans the alternative of socialism

The Republicans were split by Taft's strong anti-trust ways (which led to the break-up of standard oil.) Taft personally ticked-off T-Rooz when he launched an anti-trust case against US Steel, a deal T-Rooz himself had worked to create as president.  So the "Progressive  Party" was born with Roosevelt as it's candidate.

Of course the Republican Party vote was split and a Wilson became President.

Yes, it is all eerily similar to today.  Which says to me, "No, the world will not end because of political and economic upheaval in 2012."

Go back and look at the list of "Hot" political issues of 100 years ago and compare them to today.  Think we'll get it all straitened out by November?

“But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only. For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left. Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one left. Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect." Matthew 24:36-44

Happy New Year!-chris
